The
Wisconsin Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) has undertaken a project
to completely restore to full military configuration a Lockheed PV-2D
Harpoon bomber.
The PV-2 Harpoon was used primarily by the U.S. Navy during World War II. The Harpoon saw considerable and honorable service in both theaters of operations. Though over 500 PV-2's were built, only 35 "D" models were built before the war ended and the contract was canceled.Today there are five or six "D" models remaining. The "D" model had a specially modified nose to accommodate eight .50 cal. machine guns. Our PV-2D is currently undergoing a ground up restoration at our hanger at Waukesha County Airport. When we are finished, this aircraft will be the most completely restored and authentic military PV-2 Harpoon in the world and will receive national and international attention. We
named the plane "The Empire Express" in honor of the four Navy
bombing squadrons of Fleet Air Wing Four that operated under that name
in the Aleutians during the war. |
